Orthodox wedding on Lake Maggiore

It’s not a mystery that here at Italian Wedding Planners we love multicultural weddings!
After Rani and Edward’s wedding in Lake Maggiore and Nindy and Hetul’s Hindu celebration on the Portofino Riviera, another of our stories talks about a lovely couple coming from Bulgaria.
Their dream was to hold their wedding in Stresa, on Lake Maggiore, yet keeping intact the Bulgarian Orthodox wedding customs and traditions.

Again we had the chance to witness the deep symbolism of the Orthodox ceremony which keeps faith to ancient  romantic and meaningful rituals. No doubt bride and groom have desired to incorporate these in their Italian wedding!

And they did.. Greatly honoring their heritage throughout the ceremony set outdoors in the stunning park of the magnificent Villa that Lake Maggiore features, just few steps from the Grand Hotel Iles de Borromee.

Following the tradition bride and groom are walked in by their witnesses.

The Orthodox vicar performs a long liturgy of the Word and the blessing of the rings which are then placed on their right hand and exchanged three times signifying that from that moment on their lives are bond forever.

After joining their hands as a symbol of the union in front of the Lord, Bride and groom are crowned King and Queen of the newly created family to rule in faith, integrity and love and in harmony with Christ.

The couple then drinks wine from the same cup for three times and eats bread from a common plate signifying that they will now equally share happiness and sorrows of life together.

Holding the bible in his hands the priest leads the couple around the altar three times as a reminder that bride and groom should be led by the word of God through their life. the circle stands for the eternal marriage, with no beginning and no end.

No matter which religion or language the kiss is the universal seal, the unique tradition that bridging time, is naturally incorporated in all the weddings to symbolise the union of two soul mates with all the world to witness.

The party went on until the early hours with Bulgarian dances, vodka and fireworks immersed in the private setting of the villa in Stresa.

Stresa, once a fishing hamlet is nowadays a graceful touristic resort, located on the shores of Lake Maggiore, facing Borromeo Islands and Borromeo Gulf, a second home for many important writers and poets of 1800 and 1800 as G.B. Shaw, H. Hemingway to name a few.
They used to come here for their Grand Tour and it is precisely in Stresa where Hemingway wrote his Farewell to Army, in the the famous – now called – Hemingway suite at Grande Hotel Borromee. The town and the area became the destination of many wealthy families who have built magnificent villas along the lakefront which are now amazing wedding venues or hotels.

Valentina and Ernesto, our wedding coordinators and planners in Stresa will be happy to show you the beauty of Lake Maggiore and provide top class services for your wedding. To enquire about Stresa or Lake Maggiore contact Italian Wedding Planners.
