Great reasons for getting married in Puglia

Consider Italian wedding venues and classic locations such as Venice, the Amalfi Coast, Rome, Tuscany and Lake Como immediately come to mind. But, hey, this is Italy and it’s all bellissimo, right? That means we can get off the beaten track a little and unearth some hidden treasures for your wedding location.

Think Puglia and your first instinct might be to remember your childhood geography lessons. Puglia is the heel of Italy’s boot, right?

Well, yes. But there’s much more to Puglia than just a distinctive shape on a map of Europe. It’s a stunning setting that’s confirmed by the number of people getting married in Puglia.

Weddings in Puglia

Weddings in Puglia are rising in popularity because of the breathtaking scenery, aristocratic architecture and abundance of castles, Baroque churches, cosy chapels and ancient farm-houses today converted in luxury resorts.

There’s also a long, long coastline to explore. Around every bend it seems there’s a sleepy fishing village that’s even prettier than the last. Inland, the whitewashed ‘trulli’ towns sit in stark contrast to the verdant hills that have spawned olive groves and vineyards.

Then there’s the climate. Perfectly situated to catch every last ray of the Mediterranean sun, Puglia is the place for long, hot dry summers that begin early and end late. Temperatures tend to dip below 20 degrees only in early December.

But the really great thing about getting married in Puglia is that it’s a largely undiscovered, and therefore unspoilt, region.

Eight-hundred kilometres of coastline and pristine white beaches throw up some idyllic spots. Places like Lecce, Brindisi and Taranto are bursting with classical mediaeval architecture. Ostuni, Otranto and the island town of Gallipoli are all jaw-droppingly beautiful.

In the summer, Puglia truly kicks into life, with a host of international festivals spicing things up, such as the jazz festival at Otranto and La Notte della Tarante, at which the pizzica, Puglia’s local dance, can be seen – or experienced.

But the best thing about weddings in Puglia? You won’t have to go anywhere else for your honeymoon. After all, when you find yourself in Italy’s best-kept secret, why leave?

My girlfriend and I plan to get married in Southern Italy in 2016. We would like a wedding on or near a nice beach – either on the mainland or a small island reached by boat. Perhaps an open air service or perhaps in a nice chapel or converted building, but definitely near a nice white sand beach with nice sea as the wedding party will holiday in the area. We are planning on visiting to look at potential venues in August 2015 – do you have any that may be suitable?
