Russian Orthodox Wedding in Venice
Venice has always been a crossroad of people, cultures, religions, traditions.
This fabulous melting pot has created over the years an amazing mix of artistic and architectural styles that are one of the main features of this beautiful and unique city. No wonder weddings in Venice are so requested!
Orthodox ceremonies in Italy are becoming increasingly popular especially in Venice where a sweet little Orthodox church stands in a small “campo” with no tourist shops in the surroundings. In Venetian-Byzantine style the church has a plain brick facade, bell-tower and simple yet ancient interiors with perhaps the oldest frescoes of the city. Ksenia and Lucio, in respect of their traditions chose to hold here their Russian Orthodox wedding in Venice.
No wedding in Venice would be complete without a graceful and romantic ride in an authentic Venetian gondola! Bride reached intimate Church of St. Giovanni in a rare and ancient covered gondola, gliding slowly through the canals of Venice.
A Russian Orthodox ceremony is a very beautiful and ancient ceremony, rich in style and symbolism and very different from western ceremonies. The ceremony begins at the entrance of the church where the vicar welcomes the bride and groom and makes sure they have come of their free will. He then walks bride and groom to the altar where the rings are blessed.
Ksenia and Lucio hold a lighted candle as symbol of purity and chastity. There are no bridesmaids or flowers girls in an Orthodox ceremony, simply to witnesses n bride and groom approached the altar followed by the witnesses or best friends.
The Vicar blesses the rings and places them in the right hands of both bride and groom. Rings embody Eternal Love and infinity of marriage. Following the reciprocal vows, witnesses hold two crowns over their heads. Ksenia and Lucio are crowned King and Queen of a new family as an act of God. A holy cup of blessed wine is also offered to the couple. Sharing the same cup while holding each other hands represents sharing their love and lives. As a spiritual dance Ksenia and Lucio followed their vicar around the altar three times to represent their first steps together as husband and wife.
As the ceremony ends a motorboat waits for newly weds to take them along the Grand Canal first, and all along the famous lagoon to show them wonderful little islands around Venice. What a great occasion for stunning wedding photos!
Amazing coloured houses of the village of Burano are the ideal setting for more dramatic photos. A magic Venetian sky did the rest!
For their reception Ksenia and Lucio chose a cosy restaurant with a wide garden on Torricello Island. A lovely little island North West Venice. It is a natural island, only few people live here but more than 1500 years ago was the cradle of Venetian age. Sunset here is simply amazing it seems to be in a different dimension full of peace and charm!
A wonderful chance to discover another unforgettable corner in magical Venice.
